Abram Lincoln Harris was an recent ancestor of many slaves. He is widely considered to become the first nationally recognized economist. He was especially known for his hard work and dedication to class analysis, researching class ideologies, and its effect on race and economic status. He has books that have been published and heavily respected: The Negro Population in Minneapolis: A Study of Race Relations (1926), The Black Worker: the Negro and the Labor Movement (1931). As an economist, he was a marxist and used its theories to help try to solve the economic struggles of the black community. He himself grew up as a black middle class scholar and worked diligently to solve the problem of the financial deficiency that was of the african american community, relative to other races.
This economist interests me deeply because a century later, african americans are still facing the same problem they were then. Many rely on low income paychecks, food stamps, and government funding at a much higher percentage than other races. We as a community and nation are still facing the same problems today, showing just how difficult finding the solution really is.
